LZ Maryland Close-Up
Where to find events, ceremonies, exhibits, and attractions. Please consult the “zone” map above to spot areas you wish to visit. Here’s what you’ll find at each zone:
Zone 1: Infield & grandstands Chair Memorial – a powerful memorial of 1,017 white empty chairs in the Infield in silent tribute to Marylanders killed or missing in action; nearby signage indicates the chair reserved for each of the fallen. Main Stage – the focal point for ceremonies as well as headline talent, concerts, USO show. Motorpool and aircraft displays – Vietnam-era military vehicles (tanks, jeeps) and a half-dozen aircraft such as a Huey helicopter (yes, climb in!). It’s a great photo opportunity! Reunion lounges – Veterans and their families are encouraged to migrate to the lounges to reunite with comrades, relax and relate; each of 5 branch-of-service lounges is clearly marked for Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines to stop in. Mess Hall – the one-stop for food/beverages including traditional festival fare and Vietnamese cuisine; alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available. The Wall That Heals – the traveling, half-size replica of DC’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial includes a mobile Education Center, featuring memorabilia left at the memorial. Honor Ride – site of the culmination of the 11-mile LZ Maryland Honor Ride as hundreds of motorcycle riders, most veterans, enter in formation and conduct a throttle ceremony to salute the fallen. | Zone 2: Exhibition Building Screening Room – an air-conditioned “theatre” with comfortable seating where visitors can view nonstop films about Vietnam, including MPT’s own Maryland Vietnam War Stories and PBS specials. MPT Salutes Vietnam Veterans Traveling Exhibit – it’s traveled the state since mid-2015 and now it’s here, featuring both current-day and wartime images of 16 men and women along with their reflections on their service and other memories. Artifact display – View dozens of Vietnam War-era artifacts such as uniforms, metals, c-rations, steel pots, p-38’s, artwork, photographs, and more. The Wall of Faces – a portable memorial bearing faces of each Maryland Vietnam veteran lost in the war; solemn recognition of the Vietnam veterans who sacrificed their lives; faces put to the names of those we honor. Mess Hall – food/beverages.

Zone 3: Midway / Show Rings / Basic Training Course – where family members can compete as they race against time in this boot camp-inspired obstacle course. Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum – Huey helicopter display with crew Mess Hall – food/beverages. Tour of Duty Map – the large walk-on, sign-on map of Southeast Asia, awaiting signatures or notations by men and women who were there. Motorpool vehicles – various wheeled and trackdriven Vietnam era vehicles.
| Zone 4: Cow Palace Auxiliary Stage – features regional/local bands performing hits from the ‘50s, ‘60s, & ‘70s. Veteran Services Village – site of valuable veteran resources, services and seminars; representatives of veteran service organizations (VSOs) or nonprofits that provide veteran-oriented services are on hand to connect veterans to the resources/benefits available to them; representatives can assist one-on-one with advice on PTSD, Agent Orange, traumatic brain injuries, and other concerns; legal, financial, and housing specialists and more. Writers Hooch – Presented by The Ivy Bookshop meet Vietnam veteran-authors and other writers of Vietnam-focused fiction/non-fiction; attend authors’ presentations and purchase their books. Vietnam Education Project – prepared by middle and high school students who engaged in oral history and other projects exploring the Vietnam era and those who served. Opportunity for oral history interviews. Presentation Stage – lively presentations by experts in their fields on a variety of Vietnam-related topics. Mess Hall – food/beverages. R&R Family Zone – a retreat for activities, shopping and dining that can be enjoyed by the entire family; includes kids craft station, motorpool, thank-you gallery. LZ Maryland merchandise – site of ready-to wear official LZ Maryland apparel, souvenir challenge coins, and other merchandise. |
